As we progress from "Methods" students to student teaching, we build on our past work and continue to learn and reflect. For teachers, "reflection" means reconsidering what has transpired in your teaching with an analytical eye in order to learn from past events and posit new actions and strategies. As a new teacher, your willingness to go beyond having events "happen" to trying to analyze how you contributed (or caused) them will determine how quickly you achieve teaching excellence.
Reflective Journal Entry 1 - Due Friday, Jan 25, 2008
Reflect on what you think are your strengths and challenges as a teacher. Write two paragraphs capture these thoughts. Start by creating a new page using the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 1 - Self Assessment 1." Reflective Journal Entry 2 - Due Friday, Feb 1, 2008
Reflect on how you want to assess (monitor what students understand) and grade (record students' performances) students. Write two paragraphs that capture these thoughts. Start by creating a new page using the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 2 - Assessment Plans". We will use your goals to tune your gradebooks on this tuesday.
Reflective Journal Entry 3 - Due Friday, Feb 8, 2008
Hopefully, you have had opportunities to assess (perhaps informally) your students' abilities. Take a few minutes to describe at least one need that your high, medium, and low ability students have currently. If applicable, you can also describe steps you have (or plan to) take to address these needs. Write three paragraphs that capture these thoughts. Start by creating a new page using the link below and the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 3 - Student Needs". You will use these observations to warrant the professional development goal you identify for yourself later in the course.
Reflective Journal Entries 4 and 5 were combined into the IPlan assignment
Reflective Journal Entry 6 - Due March 7, 2008
By now, you should have assigned and graded several informal assessments. How have you been using the results of these assessments to improve how you teach and what students learn? What strategies has your CT suggested for providing students with guidance before they do the assignment to improve their performance? What about after the assignment? Create a new page using the link below and the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 6 - Informal Assessment".
At this point, you have probably been observed by both your URI instructors and your CTs. Take a few minutes to reflect on the feedback you've received. What have been your strengths and what challenges in your teaching will you need to address during the second half of your student teaching? Create a new page using the link below and the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 7 - Observation Reflection 1".
Hopefully by now you are finished (or almost finished) with your analysis of a formal and an informal assessment. Reflect on your work to identify some strategies that you will use (or try) in your own classroom to learn from formal assessments and have your students learn from formal assessments. Use the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrn 8 - Assessment" to create this journal entry.
Now that you have had a chance to experience science education as it actually occurs, it might be useful for you to reflect on the roll that you want inquiry to play in your own classroom. Use the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrn 9 - Inquiry" to create this journal entry.
Yahoo! You're done! You made it! Use this last journal entry to "Pay it backward," and to share your wisdom with those who are following in your footsteps. Use the template "EDC 484 Refl Jrnl 10 - Wisdom" to create this journal entry.
